MWH Q&A WITH JANUARY LABS FOUNDER, JANUARY OLDS
I am so obsessed with January Labs Daily Brightening Tonic right now, it’s so simple and seriously works (I was breaking out and noticed an instant difference after using this product). January Labs Essential Skin Care products are “formulated to create The Essential Stratum Barrier to provide the greatest restorative, protective and strengthening compounds so your skin has the best conditions to regenerate and reveal your healthiest glow.” P.S receive 15% off using my code: MWHJAN. Check out my Q&A with the Founder, January Olds, and let me know what you think in the comments below.
You founded an incredible business that provides skin care free of sulfites, parabens, fragrances and harmful additives — what was your inspiration behind launching January Labs?
I was inspired by issues I had with my skin. For years I struggled with hyper and hypo pigmentation. I was so in need of a cure for my skin that it led me to become an esthetician and work for two major skin care brands. During that time I realized what was really missing in the market. I wanted to create something that was simple, clean (as far as no toxic chemicals that were detrimental to the skin and body), and that work together synergistically. I also wanted to create products and blends that have multiple uses. For instance, my day cream and night cream work to tone, treat like a serum, and moisturize in one.
In a popular, growing industry like beauty and wellness, how did you stay true to your own mission without comparing yourself to other people or businesses in the same field?
The truth is, while I admire many brands, I don’t emulate them. I created January Labs to fill a void in the market for simple, natural, multi-use products that are effective and good for you.
I wanted to make skincare better, more efficacious, and simpler. The most important lesson I have learned is really trusting my gut and staying in my own lane. I found the best decisions I have made is when I’m not listening to an “expert” but following what my intuition and what my gut tells me. I think when your mind, your heart, and your gut are connected you will create something thoughtful and unique.
I love the January Labs mission of “skin care doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s as simple as that.” What are some other ways you bring simplicity into your own day to day life outside your skincare?
When it comes to my life I like to keep things simple. For me a healthy lifestyle is important. I think with diet, fitness, good relationships and really great sex (I couldn’t resist ….I’m a Scorpio haha!) life is best. I don’t really like to sweat the small things (like I did when I was young) and I make better choices now. I do what makes me happy not what I’m “supposed” to do. Having boundaries and learning to say “no” is something that has taken a while to master. You go through enough and really develop wisdom.
I follow a plant-based diet and credit that in a large part to recovering from acne. What foods do you recommend (both having and avoiding) for glowing skin?
Well, it is hard to believe you ever struggled with acne….your skin is flawless! I definitely believe in high (good for you) fats like avocado, coconut oil, sprouted nuts and salmon. I am also obsessed with this beauty water I make that has lemon, orange, grapefruit, lime, cucumber, and mint. You need to constantly flush out toxins and keep your body hydrated. I also recommend no dairy and gluten, this helps with SO many issues with the body, like digestion. I think many small meals a day as opposed to the three large meals a day is also great for the skin (as well as metabolism).
Fill in the blank. The first thing I do when I wake up is…
…make my matcha latte and spoil my dog, Boomer.
As a leader in the wellness space, what is one piece of advice that you would give someone who wants to start their own career in this field?
I think you have to have patience and really believe in what you are selling and the message you are sending. It was very important for me to grow my company organically and that takes time. I also wanted to provide exceptional service and experiences to my customers and that takes a lot of work (especially when you have a small team). Passion drives me, without it what is the point!
